Health Insurance for British Citizens in France

Navigating French healthcare after Brexit can involve S1 questions, French statutory registration, complementary cover and private medical-insurance options. The correct route depends on your individual circumstances and the country responsible for your healthcare.

S1: eligibility is conditional, not automatic

Some people may be eligible. If you live in France and receive a UK State Pension or certain UK benefits that are exportable, you may be able to apply for a UK-issued S1. Eligibility is not automatic: it depends on the benefit, residence, individual circumstances and applicable coordination rules.

Check the responsible state first. If you receive a state pension from the country where you live, or have links to more than one social-security system, responsibility for healthcare may be France or another country rather than the UK. NHS Overseas Healthcare Services/NHSBSA and the relevant CPAM should be asked to confirm the route that applies.

Registration is a separate step. An issued S1 must be registered with the local CPAM before it can support registration with the French system. French healthcare then operates under French statutory rules and can still involve patient contributions.

Complementary cover

A complementary policy may help with eligible costs not reimbursed by the French statutory system, depending on individual needs and policy terms. It does not replace statutory eligibility, and its limits, exclusions and waiting periods should be read carefully.

Before statutory rights are active

Working-age arrivals, people without an S1 route and people awaiting registration may need to investigate a different type of temporary, private or international cover. The visa route and any policy certificate must be checked against current official requirements.

Practical checks

  • • Confirm whether you receive a UK State Pension or an eligible exportable benefit; do not assume all benefits qualify.
  • • Check which country is responsible for your healthcare before relying on an S1.
  • • If issued, ask the CPAM about S1 registration and required evidence.
  • • Review complementary or private policies by their actual terms rather than assuming full reimbursement.
